Milan,
Italian Milano, city, capital of Milano province and of
the region of Lombardy , northern Italy. It is the leading
financial centre and the most prosperous manufacturing and commercial city of
Italy.
The destiny of Milan, like that of many of the
world’s great cities, remains something of a historical paradox. There are
powerful factors supporting the argument that Milan should have become the
capital of a unified Italy, and this is the belief of many Milanese, in spite
of the fact that the unity of Italy was actually born in Turin, rather
than in Milan, in 1870. Milan, nevertheless, is the most industrious and vital
city to have achieved prominence since the ancient land of Italy became aware
of itself as a modern nation state.
